David Ferrer tempest through in Spain

Top seed David Ferrer took one hour and 31 minutes to reach the quarter-finals of the Valencia Open in Spain as he breezed past Canadian Vasek Pospisil 6-3 6-3. Third seed Gael Monfils was in equally influential form as he followed Ferrer into the last eight with a simple 6-2 7-6 (7/5) success against Spaniard Pablo Andujar.

In first-round action, the biggest victim was eighth seed Feliciano Lopez, who fell 4-6 6-4 7-6 (7/2) to American Alex Bogomolov Jr in a match lasting two hours and 18 minutes. Also in the opening round, sixth seed Juan Martin Del Potro beat Russia's Dmitry Tursunov 6-4 6-1, and Marin Cilic was a 6-4 6-4 winner over Milos Raonic of Canada.
