Greg Chappell difficulty DRS uniformity

Posted by Admin On 11:07 AM

Former India coach Greg Chappell has slammed India on their unwillingness in using the Decision Review System in the Test series against Australia. Debutant Ed Cowan and Mike Hussey were wrongly adjudged out after the umpires failed to notice that the ball did not touch the bat on its way to the wicketkeeper on either occasion.

Australia was 214 for five when Cowan was given out caught behind off Ravichandran Ashwin. Television replays, however, showed that umpire Ian Gould may have erred. Chappell said the latest innovation in cricket should be used, cutting across all series.

There is no question, DRS have to be implementing uniformly to help cut down on umpire errors,Chappell told. The former Australian skipper seemed to differ with India's problems with the DRS, adding that the system, though not full-proof, could still decrease on-field errors by the umpires.

They probably reckon that batsmen tend to benefit from close decisions. The problem is that the skill used is not perfect, but then nothing in the world is. You will still have a few errors, but the idea is to eliminate the howlers, Chappell said.

However, Chappell was easy on the Ian Gould and Marais Erasmus, saying their respective decisions against Cowan and Hussey were not exactly howlers but underlined his position, adding only TV replays could have helped the batsmen stay on at the crease.

When you look at the real-time images, you definitely get the feeling that Hussey was out. Only when you look at the slow-motion replays do you realize that he had not nicked it.In Cowan's case too, the umpire must have heard a noise which may have encouraged him to give the batsman out,Chappell said.
