NHL: Four-up Matt Moulson flames New York

Matt Moulson put on a show with four goals for the New York Islanders in their 5-4 victory over the Dallas Stars. The 28-year-old scored twice in the first period, and frequent that in a seven-goal second, to become the first player in the NHL to hit four in a game this season.

Dylan Reese also scores for the Islanders, with Tomas Vincour, Eric Nystrom, Jake Dowell and Tom Wandell reply for Dallas who stands third in the Western Conference. The Islanders nudged off the foot of the East with their win.

The New York Rangers, fourth in the Eastern Conference, won a fifth straight game, existing 4-2 on the road against the Tampa Bay Lightning with goals from Ruslan Fedotenko, Artem Anisimov, Derek Stepan and Henrik Lundqvist, while Steve Downie and Tom Pyatt netted for Tampa Bay.

Craig Adams, Arron Asham and Pascal Dupuis scored for the West-leading Pittsburgh Penguins in a 3-2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes, whose goals both came from Jamie McBain. Dale Hunter had his first win as coach of the Washington Capitals - 3-2 against the Ottawa Senators thanks to Brooks Laich's ultimately winner.

The Florida Panthers scored three times without reply in the second period as they enjoy a 5-3 win over the San Jose Sharks, sealed by Dmitry Kulikov's late power-play goal. Logan Couture scored twice for San Jose.

Claude Giroux was among the goals, with his 15th of the season, as the Philadelphia Flyers beat the Phoenix Coyotes 4-2, while the Boston Bruins were booming 4-1 winners against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Montreal Canadiens put a four-game losing streak behind them to edge the Los Angeles Kings 2-1 with goals from Tomas Plekanec and Andrei Kostitsyn, while the Buffalo Sabres beat the Nashville Predators 3-2 as Luke Adam, Zack Kassian and Tyler Ennis netted.

Evander Kane's two goals help the Winnipeg Jets to a 4-2 win over the New Jersey Devils, while Marian Hossa also scored a double to guide the Chicago Blackhawks to a 5-2 success alongside the St Louis Blues.
