When Ferrer finally got on court he dispatched fellow Spaniard Pere Riba 6-2 7-6 (7-4) in a match permanent just over two hours, saving all four of the break points against him.
Slovenia's Blaz Kavcic higher to a last eight meeting with Tomas Berdych when his listed second round adversary, Argentina's Juan Monaco, withdrew with a foot injury.
