Open champion Darren Clarke came back down to earth with a knock in the breach round of the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in Akron. Paired with Tiger Woods for the previous world number one's return to golf, Clarke drooping to joint last place in the 76-man field with a seven over par 77.
The Ulsterman was previously three over when that happened and afterwards he came home in a six over 41 that included going in the lake for a twice bogey seven on the 16th and more dropped shots on the final two holes.
Alongside Clarke is stalemate Simon Dyson, who had to make some hasty travel plans after qualifying for the event by delightful the Irish Open on Sunday. At least there is no middle cut for them to worry about.
On a day of low scoring Padraig Harrington, Justin Rose, Ian Poulter, Graeme McDowell and Paul Casey all miss out. The first four all shot one over 71s, while Casey double-bogeyed his concluding hole for a 73.
