Coventry athlete Rowena Cole hit the heights at the latest On Camp with Kelly get-together as she knowledgeable training in an altitude hollow. Cole was joined by her coach at Coventry Godiva Harriers, Norma Pugh, at the Aviva-sponsored event at Leeds Metropolitan University.
The day started with an injury deterrence workshop with leading physiotherapist Alison Rose, who treated Dame Kelly Holmes during her career. They learned a series of exercises to help correct imbalance and weaknesses as well as some useful self-massage techniques.
Dame Kelly then led the athlete through an intense aqua-jogging session. In the afternoon, the athletes and coaches took part in a workshop on altitude training with English Institute of Sport senior physiologist Dr Barry Fudge.
After learning about the theory of preparation at altitude, Cole had the opportunity to experience exercising in an altitude chamber set to 3,000 metres above sea level. Cole said: “I really enjoyed the get-together. I found it really beneficial having the elevation talk as I had a lot of questions about it and I now appreciate a lot more about it.
“The pool preparation session in the morning was really good, it was great to have Kelly there motivating us and effective us how to improve our method. “It’s been great to see Kelly, all the On Camp with Kelly athlete and team and I’m very thankful to Aviva for backing the day.”
