Future seem bright for Danbury boxer Rodriguez

The International Boxing Association junior middleweight championship belt sparkle splendidly amid the continuous popping of flashbulbs. It was a night full of celebration and reflection, and as Danbury boxer Delvin Rodriguez gather with his fans to savor his latest victory, there was also a sense of anticipation.

Because, like Rodriguez said to the crowd of several hundred fans that packed into Danbury Billiards on Federal Road Thursday night a mass that included Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton and Connecticut State Senator Michael McLachlan.

Rodriguez and his team including trainer Fernely Feliz, manager A.J. Galante and strength coach Matt Patren signed autographs for and took pictures with hundreds of fans on Thursday with the jewel encrusted title belt virtuously on display.

And while the IBA Continental title is certainly a glorious attainment for Rodriguez -- a 31-year-old veteran of the ring who has paid his dues over the course of an expert career that started when he was still a teenager it is also a perfect launching pad to reach even superior heights.

That, of course, is the ultimate goal for any fighter, and Rodriguez made tremendous strides toward making that dream a reality in the last year. With a new team in his corner, Rodriguez fought two enormous bouts against Pawel Wolak.

The first bout, an exciting slugfest held on July 15 at the Roseland Ballroom in New York City, was declared a majority draw and was recently named the Fight of the Year by Sports Illustrated. The rematch on Dec. 3 at Madison Square Garden was another brutal fight between two warriors, but this time, Rodriguez won a common choice and captured the IBA title. A dream come true, for sure, but Rodriguez and his team are far from finished.
