Keith Kilgore to retire as Fort Bend ISD athletic leader

With 15 state championships in the last two decades, the sports scene in the Fort Bend area has grown to one of the state's most dynamic and victorious school districts. Nearly 20 years after taking the job, the man accountable for directing it all is retiring.

Fort Bend ISD athletics director Keith Kilgore will retire later this month. He has flirted with the idea for several years but always found a reason to stay on board. This time he is more influenced than ever.

I don't know that I do know this is the right time,he said with a smile.I truly love my job. I'm providential to go to work every day and like what I do. I like the people I work with. I love watching kids play. Fort Bend athletes are phenomenal.

The school district's sports scene has seen plenty of development since Kilgore became healthy director in January of 1993. He took over for Buddy Hopson. Elkins High School had just opened so six high schools have been built during Kilgore's tenure.

Hall Stadium, Hopson Field House and Don Cook Natatorium also opened while Kilgore had the job. Perhaps his most preferred memory, he said, has been the rise of softball in Fort Bend. The district debuted softball in 1993. Teams knowledgeable on the corner of football practice fields before the first field finally was built at Elkins. Nine years after the debut, Clements and Elkins met in the Region III-5A championship game.

Kilgore said he remembers vibrantly the day of the regional semifinals, which were played in a doubleheader at the University of Houston. Clements played first and defeated Pasadena Dobie, 3-1. Elkins followed with a 1-0 win over Alvin in which the winning run scored with two outs in the home half of the seventh.I've always been mainly proud of what we skillful there,Kilgore said. It's extraordinary we accomplished that much in such a short period of time.

When Elkins won the state title the following season it was not the first contest or the last state championship for a Fort Bend ISD team. The district has won state titles in softball, baseball, track and field, boys basketball and golf. That doesn't count all of the individual state championships won in track, swimming and tennis.

The latest teams to arrive at the state's biggest stage or this season's Hightower football team, the 2009 Hightower girls basketball team and the 2009 Bush boys basketball team that won the title. Last year Region III-5A boy’s basketball championship game pitted Hightower and Travis.
