Roddick and previous champion Ferrero have pulled out of the French Open due to bear injury. World number 11 Roddick had skipped this week's lead-up event in Nice to try to recover in time for the Roland Garros contest which begins on Sunday.

But organizers this evening state publicly that the American, who has never made it past the fourth round in Paris, would miss the event along with 2003 champion Ferrero. Ferrero, 31, has played just two contests this year, both in his native Spain, as his position has slipped to 72.

Chela tenable a 6-1 7-6 (7-1) victory over John Isner of the United States to give Argentina an unassailable 2-0 lead in the tie. Earlier, team-mate Juan Monaco scored a minor upset over world number 10 Mardy Fish, winning 7-6 (7-4) 7-5.

The win comprehensive Argentina's unbeaten record in the contest to three matches and booked their place in the final via the red group as they seek to win the title for a fifth time. Also in the red group, Kazakhstan and Sweden, neither of whom can progress, stand 1-1 overnight. Robin Soderling beat Andrey Golubev 6-7 (4-7) 7-6 (9-7) 6-3, after Mikhail Kukushkin's earlier 6-0 6-1 win over Christian Lindell.

Succeed from the blue group remains wide open with both Serbia and Germany nudging into 1-0 overnight leads over Spain and Russia respectively. All four teams can still claim a final place. Serbian world number 16 Viktor Troicki took just 84 minutes to dismiss Spain's Marcel Granollers 6-4 6-4, ahead of Friday's second singles and the potentially decisive doubles rubber.

Meanwhile, Germany also gave themselves a good chance of booking a final place after Philipp Petzschner beaten Russian adversary Igor Andreev 6-2 6-4 in 88 minutes.
