Athletics-U.S. sprinter Mike Rodgers prohibited for doping

Posted by Admin On 11:36 AM

U.S. sprinter Mike Rodgers has conventional a nine-month ban for a failed drug test but will still be able to fight in the London Olympics if he qualifies, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) said on Thursday.

The former American 100 metres champion, who tested positive at an event in Italy last July, will be disqualified through April 19, making him eligible for the U.S. Olympic trials in June if he meets testing necessities.

Rodgers said he has since learned that the disqualified refreshment methylhexaneamine, found in many energy drinks and nutritional supplements, is acceptable in out-of-contest training but banned from in-competition.
Needless to say, this has been both a awesome and enlightening practice,Rodgers said in a statement.I made a huge fault and take full responsibility for my actions.

Athletics: Rivals demonstrate Usain Bolt too much respect, says Olympic confident Kim Collins

Posted by Admin On 11:25 AM

KIM Collins has told his Olympic 2012 sprint rivals to stop standing back and admiring London hot favorite Usain Bolt. The 35-year-old athlete from St Kitts and Nevis, who won bronze in the 100 metres in the World Championships in Daegu when Bolt false-started, is in Glasgow for the AVIVA International Match at the Kelvin Hall tomorrow.
Collins will captain a Commonwealth Select team in the match against Great Britain, the United States, Germany and Russia. It is his seventh visit to Scotland for the fixture. And the outspoken Collins feels there is far too much deference paid to Jamaican icon Bolt by those who line up against him on the starting blocks.
“You cannot be an athlete and be a fan,” Collins told the Scottish athletics website. “Too many athletes do not seem to understand that fact. To me it is approximately as if when they take to the track they expect Bolt to win. They do not go out there seriously thinking they are going to challenge him. They have somehow lost the idea of contest.”
“There are people who can beat him this year in London. You have to try. It is not enough just to ‘be there’. “Track and field is not a contact sport. Nobody can knock you off your stride. If you run your very best then nobody can physically stop you and it does not matter who you are up against. If you are thinking all the time about the resistance then you are beaten before you start.”
Collins has seven World Championship medals, both indoors and outdoors, to his name and is looking onward to appearing in front of a sell-out Glasgow crowd tomorrow. He said: “I love the AVIVA event and that is why I am back in Glasgow for the seventh time.
Kilbarchan’s Claire Gibson got her GB call-up when Jenny Meadows pull out of the 800 metres and tomorrow will be the end of 20 years of hard work, she said.“Clearly, perseverance is the key to my career,” joked the sports analyst on a visit to Sacred Heart Primary School in Glasgow with Collins and the AVIVA International Trophy.

Ramos puts 122-pound title on line vs. Cuban Rigondeaux

Posted by Admin On 11:00 AM

Guillermo Rigondeaux has fought just eight times as a professional, winning all of them. But don't let his lack of pro experience fool you. Rigondeaux is a 31-year-old Cuban who defected in 2007 with former teammate Erislandy Lara.

He's one of the most accomplished amateurs in history, with nearly 400 fights and two Olympic gold medals under his belt.

Since coming to the U.S., Rigondeaux, whose nickname is "El Chacal" (The Jackal) has trained under two of the best in the business, Freddie Roach and Ronnie Shields, his current cornerman.

So Rigondeaux (8-0, 6 KOs), will fight for the WBA super bantamweight title against another unbeaten fighter and the champion, Rico Ramos (20-0, 11 KOs), Friday night (Showtime, 11 p.m. ET) at the Palms Casino in Las Vegas.

It's Ramos' first defense of the title he won by knocking out Akufumi Shimoda in the seventh round last July in Atlantic City. Ramos has not fought since.

Rigondeaux has had an even longer layoff, with his last fight a first-round knockout of Willie Casey in Dublin, Ireland, last March.

Despite Ramos' more extensive professional record and his title belt, Rigondeaux is a heavy favorite.

"A lot of people are doubting me for this fight but who cares?" says Ramos. "It's me and him in that ring. I came to keep that title. I'm the WBA champ and I will stay the champ.

It's hard work to stay the champion. I put a lot of hard work and dedication into this. I'm still moving, man. I've got my son, he's 2, that keeps me motivated. I've got my fans, my friends, my family, it all keeps me motivated."

Rigondeaux, who is nothing if not confident, says, "Of course I should be the betting favorite. What should I expect from Ramos? He has to worry what to expect from me.

"I'm very happy for the opportunity to win a title with less than 10 pro fights. I'm ready for the challenge."

Posted by Admin On 10:50 AM

The International Boxing Federation announced just hours before the hearing was planned to start in New Jersey that the English fighter's team had indistinct their minds without giving a reason.
A statement from the IBF public relations director, Jeanette Salazar, said:I just wanted to advise you the IBF conventional notice that Golden Boy Promotions withdraw their demand of the Khan-Peterson bout.
One possible explanation for the withdrawal of the appeal could be that Golden Boy and Peterson's team have come to an accord over a repeat between themselves.

Athletics attain a deal with Bartolo Colon

Posted by Admin On 10:22 AM

The Oakland Athletics have reached agreement on a one-year agreement with free-agent right-hander Bartolo Colon. Athletics general manager Billy Beane, contacted by phone, would not confirm the Colon deal, which MLB.com reported is worth nearly $2 million and perhaps includes a signing bonus. The deal won’t be administrator until Colon, who will turn 39 in May, takes a physical.
Beane did say the A’s are vigorously exploring the current market of available players. He has said in recent weeks that, in addition to signing a preliminary pitcher, the A’s also would like to obtain an experienced outfielder and possibly a relief pitcher if the budget allows.
We are pursuing some veteran free agents to help out the young guys we’ve traded for,Beane said. And we’ve got a few other things going on.Colon also had been negotiating with the Arizona Diamondbacks before choose the A’s as his seventh major league team. The New York Yankees also had expressed the possibility of bringing Colon back in fresh weeks.
Colon was out of baseball since mid-2009 before enjoying a rebirth with the Yankees in 2011, going 8-10 with a 4.00 ERA over 164 1/3 innings. Plagued by elbow and rotator-cuff issues in recent years, Colon was buoy by stem-cell treatment from his bone marrow and fat. Colon reportedly clocked 94-96 mph with his fastball in his 29 appearance (26 starts) last season.
However, Colon faded down the stretch, going 0-4 with 5.37 ERA in his final 10 starts. He was left off the Yankees’ postseason roster. Colon is 161-113 during his 14-year career, which includes stints with the Cleveland Indians, Montreal Expos, Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Angels, Boston Red Sox and Yankees.
Colon will help the A’s make up for the revolution experience they lost when both Gio Gonzalez and Trevor Cahill were traded away for prospects recently. In addition, left-hander Brett Anderson is expected to be out until midseason as he recovers from Tommy John surgery.

Athletic director position could be removed

Posted by Admin On 10:43 AM

The overarching athletic director position for the Davenport Community School District has been eliminating once before. If the school board adopts one of the top recommendation from the district’s Resource Allocation group, the position could be gone again.

Longtime Davenport Schools administrator Brad Oates is in his third year as district-wide athletic director, but eliminating his position is third on an 11-item precedence list. According the committee, which release its planned list Tuesday, doing without the location would save $132,000.

“It came about because we were looking at every single position,” Davenport Schools superintendent Art Tate said. “Some people remembered, jeez, sometimes we’ve had and sometimes we haven’t.”

Indeed, the position dates back to the opening of Davenport West High School in 1960. Butch Stolfa first held the job, and he had several successors before the district de-emphasized the position’s athletic focus in the mid-’90s. Paul Johnson counted athletic director among several duties he had at that time.

The job returned to one of administrative significance with the hiring of Randy Schrader in 2001. He had the task of restoring the Davenport schools to athletic importance they enjoyed in decades past.

Oates oversees physical teaching and health curricula for the district and manages Brady Street Stadium. He also handles the athletic budget and implements rules and system. To him, the job is vital to the district, where he has worked in a variety of capacities for 28 years. “In my mind, we have a long way to go,” Oates said of the possibility of his position being cut. “It’s just a first step.”

In regard to handling Oates responsibilities, Tate said another district manager could absorb the duties. Alternately, one of the three high school building athletic directors could be given authority as “lead” athletic director. There are supplementary possible cuts to athletics for the public and the school board to believe before the 2012-13 budgets is sent to the state for approval by April.

Eliminating assistant golf coach position for boys and girls at each of the three high schools would save $20,000. Better coordinate transportation for different teams at the same school would save $50,276. Oates said he and the high school athletic directors have already coordinated and considerably reduced the number of buses used to travel to team rivalry.

Peterson manager explode dishonorable Amir Khan

Posted by Admin On 9:03 AM

Lamont Peterson's manager on Wednesday blasted Amir Khan and Golden Boy Promotions for their refusal to accept the British boxing star's defeat by the American last month. It would be an dryness to characterize Lamont as being dissatisfied in the immoral manner in which Khan is attempting to discredit his presentation in the ring and victory,Barry Hunter, Peterson's manager/trainer said in a declaration.

Khan lost both his World Boxing Association and International Boxing Federation light-welterweight titles after home-town fighter Peterson was award a controversial split-decision victory following their bout in Washington on December 10.

The 25-year-old Khan had questioned the performance of referee Joe Cooper and aired grievance over alleged inconsistencies with the judges' scorecards, finally rotating his attention to a mystery individual at ringside, later recognized as an IBF official who was there as a spectator.

Khan blames everyone and everything but his performance and lack of ability to make adjustment in the ring for his loss,Hunter said.He claims that the Ring presenter privately stated he won, then that the referee's discretionary actions should be overruled, then a mystery man in a black hat with no association to the Peterson Camp somehow affected the outcome of the bout, and also that the judges did not score the Bout correctly.

Each claim is boldly false, but because Golden Boy and Khan have the financial capital to file protests and lawyers to create doubtful accusations we are forced to address these issues. Hunter charged that Golden Boy has gone on a media blitz as some form of revenge against Peterson after the American's camp refuse their offer of a rematch just days after the fight.

Real Champions don't persist to come up with various excuses and false accusation in hopes that something will stick to cover up for a loss,Hunter said.  Khan has formally appealed the decision, with his camp hopeful for the bout to be affirmed a no opposition so that he would retain his titles.

On Saturday, Golden Boy Promotions managerial Richard Schaefer told Sky Sports News that the WBA have obtainable Khan a rematch with Peterson and urged the IBF to follow suit.  If that report is true, Hunter said, and then WBA officials haven't followed their own actions for review the fight.

Athletics: Scotland struggles to ninth in Holyrood result

Posted by Admin On 9:57 AM

The big disappointment of Saturday’s BUPA Great Edinburgh Cross Country at Holyrood Park was the poor form of the Olympic 5000m and 10,000m winner Kenenisa Bekele and Scotland’s Steph Twell who, most bizarrely for her, failed to show up for her post-race press conference.

Twell did have the distraction of collecting the cup for Great Britain and Northern Ireland, who took the overall team competition with 144 points to the 196 of the USA and 215 for the European Select.

But, worryingly, the Aldershot-based runner, who won bronze for Scotland in the 1500 metres in the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games, appears to be not yet back to the sort of fitness to confront for a place in the London 2012 Olympics following a horrific triple ankle fracture suffered last year.

However, there were a number of tremendously promising performances on the day from young Scots who may not be quite ready for London but could be demanding for places in Glasgow 2014.

Twell started well in the senior women’s 6k race and was in the most important four for the first of the three laps. But when European champion Fionnuala Britton of Ireland determined to open up at the start of the second, which was 20 seconds faster than the first, Twell was unable to respond and drop back, ultimately finishing ninth.

“It was a poor run,” said her coach Mick Woods, who refused to believe that the heavy, wet ground had been a factor. “It was wet in Belgium and she ran much well there,” he added, referring to a race she had before Christmas.

By difference, Twell’s 2010 Delhi team-mate Freya Murray, who is prepare for her first marathon in London in April, came through strongly and for a time held third place before vanishing slightly to fifth.

Both Twell and Murray are due to leave tomorrow for a month’s altitude training in Kenya along with Glasgow’s Beth Potter, who with no trouble won the women’s Inter-District race yesterday. “I was disappointed not to hold on to third but overall I’m pleased,” said Murray, who will defend her Scottish cross country title in Falkirk next month before heading for Boulder, Colorado, for another stint of altitude training under the management of her coach Steve Jones before her London debut.

Posted by Admin On 11:41 AM

Five men with World Championship or Olympic skill will step to the start line of the men's 50-meter dash at the U.S. Open Track and Field event January 28 at Madison Square Garden.

Jamaica's Asafa Powell, Americans Justin Gatlin and Trell Kimmons, Trinidad's Richard Thompson and Antigua's Daniel Bailey have all devoted to the men's 50m of the U.S. Open to create a tremendously deep and international field.

Previously proclaim stars committed to the U.S. Open comprise David Oliver, Bernard Lagat, Veronica Campbell-Brown, Jesse Williams, Christian Cantwell, Adam Nelson, Jason Richardson, Dawn Harper, Kellie Wells, Tiffany Ofili Porter, Ryan Whiting and Jenn Suhr.

The opening edition of the U.S. Open is the first event of USATF's Visa Championships Series and will be held in the newly renovated Garden. The first major particular meet in the United States to kick-off the 2012 Olympic year, it will be broadcast on Sunday.

The former 100m world confirmation holder in the 100m, Powell will make his first inside exterior since 2004 at the U.S. Open. The Jamaican legend has run more sub-10-second 100m dashes than anyone in history. He held the world 100m record of 9.77 seconds from 2005 until teammate Usain Bolt bettered the mark in New York in 2008.

It sets up a matchup flanked by Powell, 29 years old, and Gatlin, 28. The rivalry between the two was a key storyline caption into the 2004 Olympic Games and subsequent World Championships. Top 10 Fights Boxing Fans require to spot in 2012

Posted by Admin On 10:51 AM

1) Manny Pacquiao Vs Floyd Mayweather Jr.

I came pretty close to departure this fight off the 2012 list because, finally, what else is there to say? For the best part of three years, this has been the fight sports fans the world over have wanted to see yet all have been left disenchanted. I had hoped to see this in early 2010; however Pacquiao chosen to chase titles and money in a nonsense fight against Joshua Clottey and Mayweather made his annual exterior against a shopworn Sugar Shane Mosley.

The concern for both men as we enter 2012 is that, in a similar scenario facing Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson before their match up ten years ago, that time has moved on too long to advantage either man’s resume. In Pacquiao’s case, any win over Mayweather would be colossal, but for the American, with his Filipino rival arrangement slight signs of decline, boxing historians may bemoan an unwillingness to make this match up two years ago.

2) Amir Khan Vs Lamont Peterson

A fight certain to be made in 2012, all which remains to be resolved, is whether Lamont Peterson enters the ring as combined light-welterweight champion of the world or if Khan’s contentious defeat in Washington during December will be overturned.

Either way, Khan will come at this rematch with much to prove. A second defeat in just over three years is not in the least bit terminal for his long term prospects, however, should the British fighter want a superfight against Floyd Mayweather in the next 18 months, he will need to beat Peterson handily. The concern for domestic fans will be that this fight may scupper hopes of a Khan meeting with undefeated Kell Brook in 2012. However, should both men avoid defeat before the autumn I would suggest a fight between the pair could be made in November or December?

3) Andre Ward Vs Lucian Bute

Arguably the most unlikely fight on this list. Not because either man does not want the fight- two unbeaten world champions facing off is always striking- but arguments on location could be a stick point with both men loathe fighting away from home.

Ward has the WBC, WBO and Ring Magazine belts at this weight and may feel that he doesn’t need Bute’s IBF strap to authenticate his claim as top dog in the super middleweight division. If the fight is to be made, I would wager a Vegas showdown towards the back end of the year after each man has secured one further protection each.

4) Carl Froch Vs Mikkel Kessler

After two and a half years of must win bouts, Mikkel Kessler and Carl Froch may find themselves in another one before the end of 2012. Froch must prove that his defeat to Andre Ward is not symptomatic of a decline at the highest level and Kessler needs to demonstrate that he is fully healed from the career intimidating eye injury that scuppered his participation in the latter stages of the Super Six.

A UK based rematch of their 2010 slugfest would appear the most logical step although Froch’s frosty relationship with the Sauerland promotional team that controls the Danish former champion could put a spanner in the works.

5) David Haye Vs Vitali Klitschko

Say what you will about David Haye in the wake of his disappointing defeat to Wladimir Klitschko last July, but the brash Brit remains the most profitable prospect in the heavyweight division and a cash cow that the other Klitschko brother, Vitali, will want to take full advantage of.

As with Haye’s fight with Wladimir last year, Britain’s Dereck Chisora stands in the way of an immediate deal being struck, however Vitali will see that as no more than a warm up before the final chief fight of his career. At 40, Haye will back his chances of topple the elder Klitschko despite being out of the ring for a year by the time the primary bell rings.

Fort Bend ISD athletics director Keith Kilgore will retire later this month. He has flirted with the idea for several years but always found a reason to stay on board. This time he is more influenced than ever.

Nine years after the debut, Clements and Elkins met in the Region III-5A championship game.

Kilgore said he remembers vibrantly the day of the regional semifinals, which were played in a doubleheader at the University of Houston. Clements played first and defeated Pasadena Dobie, 3-1. Elkins followed with a 1-0 win over Alvin in which the winning run scored with two outs in the home half of the seventh.I've always been mainly proud of what we skillful there,Kilgore said. It's extraordinary we accomplished that much in such a short period of time.

When Elkins won the state title the following season it was not the first contest or the last state championship for a Fort Bend ISD team. The district has won state titles in softball, baseball, track and field, boys basketball and golf. That doesn't count all of the individual state championships won in track, swimming and tennis.

The latest teams to arrive at the state's biggest stage or this season's Hightower football team, the 2009 Hightower girls basketball team and the 2009 Bush boys basketball team that won the title. Last year Region III-5A boy’s basketball championship game pitted Hightower and Travis.
